Google: Developing post-quantum cryptography migration timetable with the goal of 2029
On March 26, Google announced the 2029 time point and plans to complete the post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migration to ensure data security in the quantum era. Google said that last month we called for building a strong security line for the quantum age before future quantum computers can crack existing encryption algorithms. This new timetable is formulated to adapt to the migration needs of the post-quantum cryptographic era after comprehensively considering factors such as the progress of quantum computing hardware research and development, quantum error correction technology, and quantum decomposition resource measurement. Quantum computers will pose a major threat to current cryptographic standards, especially encryption algorithms and digital signature technologies. Threats faced by encryption algorithms already exist, namely "store first, decrypt later" attacks; digital signatures face future threats, which need to be completed before quantum computers (CRQC) that pose practical threats to cryptography come out. Transition to quantum cryptography. So we adjusted our threat response model to prioritize post-quantum password migration of identity authentication services-a key aspect of cybersecurity and digital signature upgrades. We recommend that other technical teams adopt the same strategy.
