According to the Hong Kong Economic Journal, a 39-year-old Hong Kong woman met a man who claimed to be an employee of a new energy company through mobile dating software, and then transferred to WhatsApp to develop an online relationship. The other party induced the victim to invest in cryptocurrency on a fake trading platform on the grounds of high returns. In accordance with the platform's customer service instructions, the victim transferred more than HK$5.5 million to multiple unidentified individual fast-moving accounts within about two months. After that, the fraudster lost contact and the victim knew that he had been deceived. Hong Kong police received a total of 15 online love fraud cases last week, involving nearly HK$10 million in fraud. Police warned that such scams often use investment in precious metals and cryptocurrencies as bait.
