Circle shares fell 10% on analyst downgrades and DriftProtocol survey
On April 10, the share price of stablecoin issuer CircleInternet Group fell sharply on Thursday due to Wall Street downgrades and news of legal investigations related to recent encryption breaches. Circle shares closed near intraday lows in Nasdaq trading, falling 9.9% to $85.10. The decline also continued the overall weakening trend of the company's share price, which has fallen nearly 24% in the past month and about 43% in the past six months, reflecting its continued volatility after its high-profile listing last year. However, the recent correction may also partially reflect profit-taking, as Circle's share price rose sharply between February and March, driven mainly by higher stablecoin adoption. Still, some analysts advise caution. On Thursday, CompassPoint downgraded Circle's rating to "sell" from "neutral" and set a price target of $77, meaning there is still about 9% downside from current levels. Circle is also facing pressure from regulatory uncertainty in the United States. Progress on market structure legislation has been blocked, while banking groups continue to oppose yields stablecoins. However, Bernstein analysts believe these concerns are exaggerated, pointing out that Circle's core business has not been affected and emphasizing continued growth in USDC adoption and strong reserve earnings performance.
