Ripple officially announced a quantum resistance roadmap, with the core goal of making XRPLedger (XRPL) quantum resistance by 2028. The roadmap is mainly to deal with the potential attack pattern of "Harvest now, decrypt later", in which attackers now collect encrypted data and wait for future quantum computers to mature before cracking it. The entire plan will be advanced in four phases: Phase 1: Q-Day Emergency Preparedness (launched). Establish a Quantum Day (Q-Day) Incident Response Service mechanism. If the existing classic encryption system is suddenly breached, the network will immediately stop accepting traditional public key signatures and forcibly migrate to a quantum security account. At the same time, explore an asset ownership verification scheme based on Post-Quantum ZK-proofs, allowing existing account holders to safely recover funds in an emergency without exposing fragile keys. Phase 2: Risk assessment and algorithm testing (first half of 2026). Comprehensively evaluate the impact of post-quantum cryptography on the performance, storage and bandwidth of XRPLedger networks. Collaborated with ProjectEleven to conduct verifier level testing and Devnet benchmark testing, deploy NIST standardized ML-DSA quantum security signature scheme, and develop a post-quantum managed wallet prototype. Core engineer Denis Angell has deployed ML-DSA signatures on XRPL's AlphaNet. Phase 3: Devnet hybrid integration (second half of 2026). Parallel integration of candidate post-quantum signature schemes with existing elliptic curve signatures on the developer network (Devnet) allows developers to test performance and system impact without affecting the main network. At the same time, we explore post-quantum zero-knowledge proof primitives and homomorphic encryption technology for Confidential Transfers to promote the privacy and compliance capabilities of tokenized real-world assets on XRPL. Phase 4: Comprehensive upgrade of the main network (target 2028). Submit a formal amendment to the agreement, and after voting by the verifier, fully enable native post-quantum cryptography on the main network. The focus is on production-ready optimization: throughput tuning, verifier reliability assurance, and coordinated ecosystem migration to ensure a comprehensive transition without affecting network speed and settlement finality.
