US Central Command: Will provide missile destroyers and fighter jets for Operation Strait of Hormuz
On May 4, the U.S. Central Command said the military would begin supporting "Operation Freedom" on May 4 to restore freedom of navigation for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The mission, ordered by the president, aims to support merchant ships seeking free passage through this important international trade corridor. A quarter of the world's seaborne oil trade, as well as large quantities of fuel and fertilizer products, pass through the Strait. "While we maintain a maritime blockade, support for this defensive mission is critical to regional security and the global economy," said Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of Central Command. Last week, the U.S. State Department announced a new initiative in partnership with the Department of Defense to strengthen coordination and information-sharing among international partners to support maritime security in the Strait. The "Freedom at Sea Concept" aims to combine diplomatic action with military coordination, which will be crucial during the "Operation Freedom" period. The U.S. military's support for Operation Freedom will include missile destroyers, more than 100 land-and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and 15,000 officers and soldiers.
