New developments in Musk v. OpenAI case: Microsoft CEO Nadella says Musk never questioned Microsoft investment
On May 12, the Elon Musk v. OpenAI case welcomed two key witnesses on May 11 local time: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sulkweil appeared in court to testify. Nadella emphasized in court that Musk had never raised any objections to him about whether Microsoft's investment in OpenAI violated any special terms and related commitments. In 2024, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, company CEO Sam Ultraman and company president Greg Brockman, accusing them of reneging on their non-profit commitments at the time of their inception and using the shell of public welfare institutions to turn into commercial profit-making, violating charitable trust responsibilities. Microsoft was also listed as a defendant in the case. Musk accused Microsoft of aiding and condoning OpenAI's alleged violations of the purpose of the charitable trust. Since 2019, Microsoft has been the main investor in OpenAI. In 2023, Microsoft will invest up to US$10 billion in OpenAI with a single swing. Musk believes that Microsoft's $10 billion investment is a key turning point, leading him to conclude that OpenAI is deviating from its nonprofit mission. (Cailian)
