Republican Congressman James Comer, chairman of the U.S. House Oversight Committee, has written to OpenAICEOSamAltman asking him to disclose information about potential conflicts of interest between personal investments and OpenAI. The survey focused on Altman's vast personal investment network. Since Altman does not hold a stake in OpenAI, his fortune of approximately US$3.5 billion mainly comes from his personal investment portfolio, including companies such as Helion, Stripe, and Reddit. According to a previous report by the Wall Street Journal, Altman had pushed OpenAI to invest $500 million in nuclear fusion company Helion, and Altman himself had invested at least $375 million in the company. Comer said the move raised concerns about whether Altman was using OpenAI to boost the valuation of its individually held companies. In addition, the attorneys general of Florida, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, West Virginia and Louisiana have also written to SEC Chairman Paul Atkins requesting an investigation into whether Altman has "self-dealing" and serious conflicts of interest issues. Meanwhile, Altman will testify in Musk's case against OpenAI on Tuesday and Wednesday. Musk accused Altman and OpenAI co-founders of violating their original "non-profit organization" commitments and turning OpenAI into for-profit operations. Although the conflict of interest investigation and Musk's lawsuit are separate matters, Altman's personal investment issues have been involved many times during the trial. OpenAI Board Chairman BretTaylor defended Altman during the trial, saying he had "always been frank and transparent" on personal investment issues.
