Former OpenAI researcher Aschenbrenner is betting that Bitcoin miners are shorting Nvidia and AMD simultaneously

On May 19, former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner increased his disclosed investment scale from US$5.5 billion to US$13.67 billion as of March 31, 2026, and bought heavily shares of Bitcoin mining and AI infrastructure companies. Its key positions include mining companies such as IREN, CoreScientific, RiotPlatforms, CleanSpark, Bitfarms, Bitdeer and HiveDigital, betting that its power resources and data center capabilities will benefit from growing demand for AI computing power. At the same time, it also established short semiconductor positions of approximately US$7.46 billion, including large put options positions on VanEckSemiconductor ETF, NVIDIA, Oracle and Broadcom.
