Mediators believe there has been little progress in US-Iran talks, Iran insists on remaining core demands
On May 20, the Wall Street Journal quoted regional mediators and U.S. officials familiar with the relevant terms as saying that Iran's position in negotiations with the United States on ending the war has not occurred compared with previous rounds of plans that have failed to make progress. Significant changes have also raised questions about whether an "exit" to the conflict can be found. The mediator pointed out that Iran still adheres to its core demands, including ending hostilities, obtaining economic relief, compensation for war losses, and playing a supervisory role in the strategic waterway of the Strait of Hormuz. In addition, there are still obvious differences with the United States on the issue of its nuclear program. Some regional sources said that the United States and Israel have been preparing for a new round of strikes against Iran in the next few days, and some even said that an attack could be launched as early as next week.
