Trump wants to "erase" two impeachment records, experts say the process is only symbolic
On June 12, according to the Wall Street Journal, people familiar with the matter revealed that Trump and his allies had discussed pushing lawmakers to pass a resolution aimed at nullifying the two impeachment attempts he encountered during his first presidential term. The resolution would give Trump a symbolic victory and is part of a broader effort to enhance the president's political legacy. However, according to experts, the move has little legal significance because the Constitution does not provide for a procedure to revoke impeachment. "It should be done because I didn't do anything wrong," Trump said in a telephone interview this week. Any attempt to erase the two impeachment attempts in 2019 and 2021 would spark debate about Trump's past behavior, forcing Republican lawmakers to re-debate allegations of abuse of power, obstruction of Congress and sedition. People familiar with the matter said the measure is likely to be considered until after the mid-term elections in November. Several House Republicans said even so, it would be difficult to get the votes needed to pass.
