US Treasury Secretary Basent: Iran's frozen assets will be used to compensate Gulf countries if necessary
On June 12, U.S. Treasury Secretary Basent issued a warning via social platforms on Thursday, saying that if Iran causes damage to U.S. allies in the Gulf, it will compensate it at the expense of Iranian funds. "The Iranian regime is engaged in a zero-sum game, and it will eventually fail," Besent said. He further noted that "any damage Iran causes to our Gulf allies will be paid for through funds withdrawn from Iranian accounts." He also mentioned that any tolls paid to the Persian Gulf Straits Authority would also be offset by using funds from Iran's relevant accounts. Bessent also stressed: "Every attack launched by Iran will only aggravate the economic and financial consequences it faces." (Jin Shi)
