Tennessee man charged with fraud of millions of dollars in crypto Ponzi scheme
Misam M.Abidi, a 47-year-old Tennessee resident, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on suspicion of running a crypto investment fraud scheme between 2020 and 2024, illegally raising funds from investors and defrauding them of millions of dollars through the so-called "StarCredit Holdings" company. The indictment alleges that the defendant misled investors through false promises, including ensuring high returns, claiming to have large reserves of funds to ensure safety, and exaggerating the actual size of assets under management. Prosecutors pointed out that the plan was essentially a typical Ponzi structure: using new investors 'funds to pay for early investment returns rather than making profits through real transactions. In addition, the defendant was also suspected of assisting investors in applying for loans in their own names and forging documents to obtain additional funds. The investigation showed that it embezzled at least approximately US$1.9 million from investor funds for personal and household expenses, while failing to truthfully declare relevant income. The case involved multiple federal charges, including wire fraud, unlicensed money transfer business, false tax returns and money laundering. If all convicted, the defendant could face long federal imprisonment.
