Anonymous coin holder applies to New York court to dismiss Bitcoin sleeping wallet ownership lawsuit
The New York State Supreme Court has faced a key defense in an ownership lawsuit against 39069 long-unused Bitcoin addresses. An anonymous defendant who controlled the dormant wallet involved in the case formally filed an application with the court, requesting that the lawsuit be directly dismissed. The anonymous coin holder put forward the core legal point: the Bitcoin address is just a string of data characters on the blockchain, does not belong to a legal legal subject, and does not qualify for prosecution. In addition, the industry perspective supplements the fatal technical shortcoming of this case: even if the court finally decides to support the plaintiff's claim to confirm the rights, the plaintiff cannot transfer and control the Bitcoin assets online without knowing the corresponding private key. The judgment is not actually enforceable. The plaintiff in this lawsuit tried to apply New York's relevant regulations on lost and found, claiming that tens of thousands of long-sleeping BTC were abandoned assets without owners, and intended to obtain ownership of all assets through judicial channels.
