U.S. Senator Gillibrand calls for a ban on Trump and officials from issuing Meme coins
On July 4, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand called on Congress to legislate to ban all elected officials, including the president and his spouse, from issuing or sponsoring digital assets (including Meme coins). The call stems from the latest financial disclosure: Trump's revenue of approximately US$636 million in 2025 comes from the issue of Meme coins, his spouse also issues Meme coins, and earned approximately US$6 million in revenue through NFT and digital collectibles. Gillibrand said such behavior was "self-dealing" that undermined financial regulation and consumer protection, and called for immediate ethical reforms to prohibit public officials and their spouses from using their positions to make profits.
