US imposes 25% tariffs on some Brazilian goods
On July 16, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) stated on the 15th local time that according to instructions from U.S. President Trump, U.S. Trade Representative Greer took final action in accordance with Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act to impose a 25% tariff on some Brazilian goods. The decision stems from a year-long USTR investigation. The investigation found that some of the measures taken by Brazil in digital trade and electronic payment services, unfair preferential tariffs, anti-corruption law enforcement intervention, intellectual property protection, ethanol market access, and illegal deforestation were "unreasonable practices" that burdened or restricted the business activities of American farmers, workers, innovative companies and exporters. Greer said: "Despite extensive negotiations between the United States and Brazil over the past year, these issues remain unresolved. The United States remains willing to continue negotiations with Brazil to promote the resolution of long-standing issues identified in this investigation." The United States will exempt Brazilian beef and coffee from new 25% tariffs on Brazilian goods. (Jin Shi)
