Myanmar legislation to crack down on fraud, implement cryptocurrency fraud, and sentence up to life imprisonment
Myanmar's parliament passed a law on Tuesday that allows the death penalty for people who use violence or illegal detention to coerce others into engaging in online fraud. According to the draft bill released in May this year, if such abuse results in the death of the victim, the death penalty should be imposed. The new law also stipulates that those who operate online fraud parks or carry out "digital currency fraud (cryptocurrency fraud)" can be sentenced to up to life imprisonment; while criminals who commit acts such as violent coercion and illegal detention can be sentenced to 10 years to life imprisonment.
