US IRS warns cryptocurrency holders to beware of fake letter scammers attempting to steal assets or data
On July 31, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) warned cryptocurrency holders that scammers were sending forged letters to some taxpayers in an attempt to steal their digital assets or personal data. The IRS said some fake letters induce users to sign up for the so-called "Digital Asset Compliance Portal," but the platform does not exist. The agency reminds taxpayers not to scan QR codes in letters or provide information to unfamiliar callers who ask for payment.
