Starknet has initiated a crucial vote to determine whether STRK holders are willing to support the transition of the platform into an independent, quantum-resistant L1 layer.
On October 15th, the Starknet community launched a seven-day non-binding governance vote. The purpose of this vote was to determine whether holders of STRK would support further efforts to transform Starknet from an Ethereum Layer 2 network into a standalone, quantum-resistant Layer 1 network. This proposal stems from StarkWare’s announcement on October 8th that they are studying this option, with the goal of enhancing Starknet’s ability to control its own security framework. The proposal states that Starknet already uses Hash-based STARK proofs and native account abstractions, allowing users to use quantum-resistant signatures without requiring any protocol upgrades. However, since aspects such as Ethereum bridging and data availability still rely on Ethereum, the progress of quantum-resistant improvements will be limited by Ethereum’s development timeline. Moving to a standalone L1 network could potentially eliminate this dependency. Regardless of the outcome, STRK will continue to serve as the network’s token, with no new tokens issued. The bridge between Starknet and Ethereum will remain open. If the vote is successful, the community will proceed with further research and submit more detailed proposals. If the vote fails, quantum-resistant developments will continue within the L2 framework. If the results are neutral, discussions will continue until key issues are resolved.
