Bloomberg reported that Wall Street’s market reaction to the U.S. midterm elections shifted from optimism to pessimism within roughly 24 hours. In the immediate aftermath of the election, U.S. equities briefly rallied—driven by reduced event-related uncertainty and falling oil prices—but investors quickly pivoted to concerns over potential Democratic-led regulatory scrutiny of data center expansion, triggering a sharp reversal in sentiment. Within just 30 minutes of Thursday’s market open, retail investors led the way in taking profits; hedge funds, long-only asset managers, and quant-driven strategies soon followed with broad-based selling. As a result, the total market capitalization of U.S. equities shrank by approximately $3.7 trillion that day, while the Nasdaq-100 posted its largest single-day decline since March 2020. According to Vanda Research, retail investors’ net stock sell-offs ranked second-highest on record—surpassed only by two trading days during the March 2020 pandemic shock. Viraj Patel, strategist at the firm, noted that both retail and systematic investors exhibited unusually high levels of active selling.
