Google Quietly Buys Qualcomm: Mobile Chip Giant Sets Sights on Data Centers, Aiming for Over US dollar 15 Billion in Annual Revenue
On November 6 local time, Alphabet—the parent company of Google—disclosed in a regulatory filing that it held approximately 2.977 million shares of Qualcomm as of the end of its third fiscal quarter of 2026, valued at roughly $548 million. This position did not appear in filings submitted as of the end of June. Following the announcement, Qualcomm’s pre-market share price surged more than 3%. Markets quickly linked the newly disclosed stake to Qualcomm’s accelerating expansion into data center business: the company is actively reducing its reliance on smartphone chip revenue and broadening its footprint in AI infrastructure. At the same time, Google is aggressively scaling up its computing capacity to meet surging AI demand. In its latest fourth-quarter earnings report, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon reaffirmed the company’s target of achieving $5 billion in data center revenue in fiscal year 2027—a goal previously announced publicly.
