International Maritime Organization announces operating rules for evacuation plan in the Strait of Hormuz
On June 24, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced the operating details of the Strait of Hormuz evacuation plan, stating that more than 11,000 crew members stranded on ships in the Gulf region will be evacuated in stages in accordance with a unified coordination mechanism. According to documents issued by the International Maritime Organization, all ships currently waiting to be evacuated should maintain their current position and must not sail to the Strait of Hormuz or designated waiting areas on their own, but should wait for further notice. The International Maritime Organization emphasized that the move aims to avoid congestion in shipping lanes and reduce the risks posed by mines and complex navigation environments. The documents show that the British Maritime Trade Action Office (UKMTO) and the French-led Indian Ocean Maritime Information Centre (MICACentre) will be responsible for contacting relevant ships and informing them to go to designated waiting areas. Ships can then independently choose to leave the Strait of Hormuz via the northern route in Iranian waters or the southern route in coordinated waters between Oman and the United States based on their own risk assessment.
