RelayProtocol, a cross-chain interoperability platform, issued a warning saying that since RobinhodChain, the Ethereum Layer2 network based on Arbitrum, was launched on July 1, a large number of honeypot fraud tokens have emerged. After users purchase, the tokens will automatically disappear from their wallets, and the funds cannot be recovered. Relay Protocol clarified that this was not a breach of the wallet infrastructure, that the user's private key and other assets were still safe, and that the malicious logic only existed in the fraudulent token contract itself.
Honeypot tokens typically work by allowing users to buy but preventing sales through hard-coded rules, or automatically transferring funds to an attacker's wallet. Users have reported that a token contract uses hidden storage maps to bypass standard ERC-20 security checks to steal assets.
Relay Protocol said it is blocking detected fraudulent tokens and verifying security tokens. It recommends that users only trade tokens verified by trusted sources, verify the contract address before trading, and first test with small amounts of money. The platform pointed out that attracting scammers in the early days of the launch of the new chain is not a unique problem for RobinhoodChain. Similar situations have occurred when other L1 and L2 chains were launched before.
