On July 31, according to the Wall Street Journal, people familiar with the matter revealed that a data center developer working with Anthropic was conducting in-depth consultations on borrowing US$15 billion to build a large data center park and power plant in Texas. Google will provide financial guarantees and chips for this purpose. Under the agreement being negotiated, a consortium led by Morgan Stanley will provide Nexus Data Centers with a $15 billion loan to build the park in Hubbard, Texas. The park will be equipped with an own natural gas power plant capable of generating 1.6 gigawatts of electricity. The deal could be announced as early as today. To help Nexus raise debt financing, Google has guaranteed Anthropic's billions of dollars in lease and power payment obligations in case the startup defaults, people familiar with the matter said. However, one of the people familiar with the matter said that Google's support was limited and only covered the minimum amount needed for banks to complete financing. These guarantees cover the four data center lease contracts Anthropic has signed, as well as corresponding power purchase agreements, which will be supplied by in-plant owned power plants serving the park.
