Serenity, a "white-haired stock god", issued a document saying that LumentumCEO Michael Hurlston has issued a warning that the indium phosphide (InP) laser supply chain for AI data centers is facing a more serious supply gap than memory chips. Even relying on Lumentum's five InP wafer fabs, product shipments may still be more than 30% lower than customer demand, indicating that AI infrastructure expansion is encountering bottlenecks in key optical communication components. Serenity pointed out that the current supply pressure is mainly concentrated in the EML (electroabsorption modulated lasers) field, but the shortage of InP lasers may also continue to spread. I have long been optimistic about the "bottleneck investment" opportunities in the optical communication laser supply chain, and pay attention to related companies including Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI), SiversSemiconductors (SIVE), Lumentum (LITE) and Coherent (COHR). As the capital expenditure of AI data centers continues to increase, infrastructure links such as optical modules and lasers that were underestimated by the market in the past are facing re-pricing. InP laser supply bottlenecks may become a key limiting factor in the expansion of AI computing power.
