The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced final rules on September 30, which took effect on October 2. The new rules reduce the required number of members to meet regulatory requirements. In most cases, just one member is needed to satisfy this requirement. The SEC stated that this change is intended to make the agency’s rule-making process more flexible and efficient. Previously, Commissioner Hester Peirce resigned earlier this month, leaving only Chairman Paul Atkins and former Acting Chairman Mark Uyeda remaining in office. The SEC currently has five members as part of its legal board. In contrast, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) faces a more serious issue regarding leadership vacancies. Since December 2025, Michael Selig has been the only chairman and commissioner confirmed by the Senate. Both agencies originally had a requirement of five members each.
