Anthropic Warns: AI Could Soon Enter a Self-Accelerating Phase—By the Time Humans Notice, It May Already Be Too Late

In its updated IPO prospectus released on November 2, Anthropic issued a warning: AI may soon cross a critical threshold known as “recursive self-improvement” (RSI), dramatically accelerating its own R&D process. Historically, there have been multiple instances where R&D progress quietly sped up—only becoming apparent after acceleration had already become an undeniable reality. Today, Claude is already actively involved in core R&D tasks—including code writing, experiment execution, and training data processing—directly supporting the development of more powerful next-generation models. These new models, in turn, will further boost subsequent R&D efficiency, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of accelerating advancement.

Under Anthropic’s current safety policy, “crossing the critical threshold” refers specifically to either of the following occurring:
1. An AI system can independently conduct full AI research at a cost comparable to that of a human team;
2. The rate of AI technological progress doubles—e.g., advances previously expected to take two years are achieved within one.

As AI’s involvement in its own R&D pipeline deepens, its capability evolution may already be outpacing the pace of safety evaluations, alignment research, and protective mechanism updates. Anthropic explicitly states that, to date, no existing model has been assessed as having reached this threshold. This warning is based primarily on internal technical projections and forward-looking estimates of future model capabilities. To mitigate potential risks, the company is carefully evaluating revisions to its safety policy—with the central objective of ensuring sustained human oversight and control over critical R&D activities.
