Two senior Democratic sources offered a more optimistic forecast, projecting a total of 230 to 235 seats; in the event of a “landslide” victory, the number could reach 240—but party insiders widely consider that scenario far less likely than the 230–235 range. By contrast, Jeffries adopted a more cautious stance: according to a person familiar with the matter, he traveled from New York to Washington, D.C., that day and joined fellow Democratic officials for lunch at a restaurant called “The Crab Shack”—the same spot where Democrats gathered on Election Day 2018, marking the party’s last recapture of the House during the Trump presidency, when they gained 41 seats.
