On November 5, OpenAI disclosed on its official website that it has built an end-to-end autonomous security research pipeline spanning vulnerability discovery, dynamic validation, exploitability assessment, and patch generation. The pipeline is powered by an upcoming web-based model and targets the Linux kernel for scanning and validation. Running on standard desktop systems (with full hardening enabled) inside target virtual machines, it identified 2,308 candidate vulnerabilities, dynamically reproduced 1,724 of them, and produced 291 proof-of-concept (PoC) information-leak exploits. Notably, for local privilege escalation (LPE) scenarios, it successfully generated 948 working exploits compatible with mainstream Linux distributions—incurred at a total API cost of approximately $1.213 million, or roughly $1,279 per LPE exploit.

The pipeline’s workflow begins with the Scout agent preliminarily narrowing down ~5,034 audit targets—covering ~2.8 million lines of kernel code, or about 7% of the total Linux kernel codebase. Subsequently, the Analyst agent completes analysis and outputs all candidate findings within ~12 hours. OpenAI stated it has prioritized submitting patches for critical vulnerabilities in accordance with Linux community guidelines and is collaborating with Patch the Planet to continue triaging and addressing remaining reports.

Additionally, in an adapted kernelCTF test environment, the pipeline yielded 25 extra information-leak PoCs and 21 additional LPE exploits. Across a random sample of 166 LPE exploits, agents confirmed the use of at least 10 Linux exploitation techniques they assessed as relatively novel. The company emphasized the Linux kernel maintainers’ swift response: within roughly 10 days of the scan’s initiation, over 100 LPE vulnerabilities had already been patched or were in staging-patch status, while another ~300 had entered public discussion.
