Amid a global frenzy to build AI infrastructure, an unprecedented off-balance-sheet liability storm is quietly brewing in Silicon Valley. The latest quarterly reports reveal that hyperscale cloud providers—including Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon—alongside Nvidia, Broadcom, and SpaceX, have collectively disclosed $4.11 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments. That’s up nearly $992 billion—or close to $1 trillion—in just 90 days from Morgan Stanley’s late-August tally of $3.12 trillion. If we include additional off-balance-sheet commitments previously estimated by Morgan Stanley based on news reports (rather than formal financial disclosures), the total swells further to $4.29 trillion. Notably, these companies’ current on-balance-sheet debt and lease liabilities amount to roughly $1 trillion—meaning each dollar of reported debt corresponds to over $4 in off-balance-sheet commitments not reflected on their balance sheets.
