Mt. Gox pushes its repayment deadline to 31 October 2027 — the fourth delay

On 16 October 2026, Mt. Gox rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi posted a notice on the official portal: the deadlines for the Base Repayment, the Early Lump-Sum Repayment and the Intermediate Repayment have been changed again, from 31 October 2026 to 31 October 2027 (Japan Time).

The notice lands two weeks before the previous deadline was due. That timing mirrors how Mt. Gox has handled past extensions — the last one, which moved the date from 31 October 2025 to 31 October 2026, was published just four days before the deadline.

The fourth extension since 2023

Previous deadlineChanged to

31 Oct 202531 Oct 2026
31 Oct 202631 Oct 2027 (this notice, 16 October 2026)

For creditors outside Japan, the time-zone conversion used to matter: a Japan-time 31 October deadline meant roughly 16:00 Central European Time on 30 October. With this extension, that particular wrinkle is off the table for now.

How much is still unpaid: about 34,500 BTC

Mt. Gox lost around 850,000 BTC when it collapsed; roughly 200,000 BTC was eventually recovered. As of now, around 34,500 BTC (estimates range between 34,500 and 34,700) remains in the estate and undistributed to creditors — worth roughly $4 billion at mid-2026 price levels.

The more important point is why: these creditors have not been paid mainly for procedural reasons, not eligibility reasons. Many registered years ago but never completed the eligibility verification the trustee requires, while some claims remain unresolved through dispute. That is why the coins have stayed in the estate instead of reaching the market.

Under the current framework, any assets still remaining after 31 October 2027 — because creditors did not complete procedures or claims could not be resolved — would have their ultimate disposition decided by the Tokyo District Court.

What it means for the market: $4 billion of potential supply locked up for another year

Mt. Gox repayments keep drawing attention because they represent a clearly defined supply variable: once these coins start reaching creditors, "will long-term holders sell?" becomes a live stress test. Each extension over the past few years has eased that concern in the short term by pushing the supply shock out by another twelve months.

But the signal should be weighted correctly:

  • An extension is not bullish news — it defers uncertainty rather than removing it. As 2027 approaches, the same question returns.
  • Creditors may not sell immediately. In previous tranches, the amount that actually reached exchanges was far smaller than the headline totals markets feared.
  • The market's main drivers lie elsewhere. Macro data, ETF flows and leveraged liquidations are the more direct causes of recent price action. This delay removes a potential negative; it does not add a positive.

If you want the backstory

Mt. Gox's arc — from the world's largest bitcoin exchange to a 2014 collapse, missing coins, civil rehabilitation and a repayments saga spanning more than a decade — is the industry's most complete lesson in custody risk.
